Lauren James

It all began with an after-school riding lesson at a local farm on a little Shetland pony. Little did I know that the experience would lead me to the show rings at Devon, Harrisburg and Washington on my own small pony, Helicon Epic Event, a few years later. But ribbons and awards were just the outside world’s sign of the trust and respect that grew between us.

I feel so fortunate to have been exposed to ponies and horses at a young age. What inspired awe and wonder as a child also developed independence, structure and a connection to nature that may not be found with any other relationship.

As I moved on, and out, of the show circuit, the love of the animals remained. I felt as though I could contribute to the welfare of horses who were discarded and needed to be rescued from neglect or abuse. And, so I founded “The Mule Shack” to provide a sanctuary for these precious equines who are nursed back to health and now bask in the daily love and care that was so desperately missing.

In return, they provide a safe ride through the trails of the nearby Baltimore County state parkland to children and adults who may never have had the opportunity to experience a ride on a horse. Ambling through the woods, taking a soak in the creek, stopping off at the nearby restaurant while the riders have lunch….that is how they are spending their retirement.

Our Volunteers

The Mule Shack is forever grateful for the dedication and love that our volunteers give to our horses. The team effort creates a safe, nurturing and fun environment.

Ben

Ben is my very first mule and the second reason why The Mule Shack was created! He has really put all of us through the ringer with his wild and strong “muled” antics. Ben and I have had quite the adventures together, from riding the trails to swimming in the 20 ft river hole to show jumping, barrel racing and being the trusty leader of The Mule Shack in the Kingsville 4th of July parade for the last 2 years. Ben is loved by all who visit The Shack.

Black Jack

Black Jack is a former race horse that found a new career as a lesson/show hunter. He loves to get scratches behind the ears and will search you up and down for treats.

Lil’ Red

Lil’ Red is a very young quarter horse mare who came from a ranch out west. She was handled roughly and is sensitive to all. Lil’ Red has made big steps in her rehabilitation.

Maggie

Maggie was a former Amish plow mule who worked very hard in the fields. She was likely taken to auction when the Amish were done with her. She enjoys her slow and steady paced trail rides but much prefers groomed and loved on.

Teddy

Teddy was pulled from the kill pen with Cali. He is a percheron (Possibly crossed) gelding that looks like a big furry teddy bear! He is just a sweet as one too! We noticed that Teddy had a lot of hair matting with his halter embedded into his neck. The vet tested him for Cushing’s Disease which he has and is now being treated for with medication.
